Traditional air-charged filters are effective but noisy

Filtration using a column of air oxidizes sulfur, iron, and manganese to form precipitates (or solids) that can easily be filtered and removed without chemicals. A point-of-entry filter that utilizes this air-release technology can reduce sulfur, iron, or manganese with worry-free regenerations. However, in traditional air-charged filtration units, when the valve advances into the backwash, this transition can cause noisy and violent thrashing of the drain line. Similar to releasing a balloon filled with air, a large rush of air and water exits, sending the drain line flying if not adequately secured.

How Inch Worm™ works to quiet the noise

The Inch Worm™ feature in the whole-house filtration systems we install allows the filter to expel the excess pressurized air without the thrashing and loud noises associated with other air systems.

Here's how the technology works:

1. The first cycle an air-charged filter enters when regenerating is called the “Backwash Air Position.”
2. The electronics control the valve in this position through minimal movements ("inching along").
3. As the water level rises to the top of the tank, the air is released slowly and, more importantly, harmlessly down the drain.
